Over the past several months Cantabile’s Youth Singers, Assistant Musical Director and Founding Artistic Director have all been recognized for their outstanding work.
In June our Assistant Musical Director and Cantabile alumnus Geoffrey Sirett won a Dora Award for his highly acclaimed starring role in The Overcoat, a co-production of Canadian Stage and Tapestry Opera. The new opera played to rave reviews in Toronto before moving to Vancouver for another sell out run. The opera is slated to become one of the most notable new operas in the modern canon, and Geoffrey’s performance was remarkable – nuanced, moving, funny and perfectly sung.
In June our Youth Singers were awarded first place in the Ontario Music Festival Association provincial finals, and moved on to the national finals taking place this summer. The teens wowed the panel with their “Outstanding performances!… extremely polished and well executed…thank you!”
Last, but certainly not least, congratulations to our founding Artistic Director Dr Mark Sirett! ‘Truth’, set to words by Vera Wabegijig, has won Choral Canada’s ‘Outstanding Choral Composition’ for 2018. The three movement work was commissioned by Gloria Gassi, Voice faculty, conductor of St. Cecilia Singers and alumna with the assistance of Western’s Canada 150 fund. Inspired by the events surrounding the efforts of Justice Murray Sinclair in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Ms. Gassi’s aim was to highlight the themes of forgiveness and healing so that the “truth of our common experiences will set our spirits free.” Read about the composition and the award.
Congratulations one and all – thank you for helping to show the country what a musical hotbed Kingston is!
