Mother Nature has long been a source of inspiration for poets and musicians around the world. Cantabile launches its 24th season with a musical exploration of our environment, featuring works inspired by the world that surrounds and sustains us.

Enhancing the music will be images of the stunning water-inspired canvases of Su Sheedy, winner of the 2017 Mayor’s Arts Award.

Joining Cantabile will be special musical guests, local string quartet Quartessence, in music by Eric Whitacre, Sarah Quartel, and Larysa Kuzmenko.

Cantabile’s annual holiday concerts have become a treasured musical tradition for thousands of Kingstonians. The concert features an imaginative programme ranging from heart-warming carols and nostalgic winter songs to thrilling world music.

Evening performances offer audiences a magical atmosphere enhanced by candlelight and both concerts office the audience an opportunity to join in the great carols of the season. The matinee, which includes two of Cantabile’s youngest choirs, is a more light hearted performance suitable for young families.

SPIRIT & SOUL

For this concert Cantabile welcomes Daniel Taylor and his professional ensemble The Theatre of Early Music. Taylor, a world-renowned countertenor and conductor, is known as one of the finest interpreters of early  music.

As guest conductor, Taylor offers his expertise as Cantabile explores repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as contemporary works by John Tavener and Arvo Pärt.

LION KING, KIDS

Cantabile’s youngest singers are featured in this concert – a delightful musical celebration of the animal kingdom. The second half of the concert consists of a special 30-minute musical production of Disney’s The Lion King, KIDS.

Follow Symba and an unforgettable cast of characters as they travel from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again, in this beloved coming-of-age tale by Elton John and Tim Rice.

Sweet Music Here showcases a curated collection of Dr. Sirett’s favourite scores – music by Edward Elgar, Randall Thompson, and works commissioned especially for Cantabile – which have been performed over the past two decades.

A highlight will be Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs featuring baritone Geoffrey Sirett, Cantabile’s Artistic Director designate.
